FTCC Professional Development Build Lab
Using the Canvas Rubric Builder
Angela Westmoreland, M.Ed. | 50 minutes
Start with one question: What should Canvas do with this rubric?
Canvas Tip: A rubric is not finished when the content is entered. Settings and connections determine what Canvas does next.
Canvas Tip: Use simple sample text during the workshop. Do not stop to rewrite rubric content.
Each rating carries a defined point value.
Verify: rubric total, assignment points, and SpeedGrader grade field.
A rating covers a span of scores when the option is available.
Verify: what Canvas selects and what the instructor can edit.
The rubric records a level on a configured scale when supported.
Verify: instructor selection, recorded result, and student display.
The rubric supplies descriptive feedback while the grade is entered separately.
Verify: where the official assignment grade is entered.
Canvas Tip: Match rubric points to assignment points when you expect rubric selections to support the grade, then test one sample submission.
Canvas Tip: Save the activity, confirm the correct rubric is attached, and preview before publishing.
Canvas Tip: Do not assume the rubric total and assignment grade are synchronized. Verify the grade field before moving to the next student.
Students locate the attached rubric and use criteria and ratings as a pre-submission check.
When enabled in Enhanced Rubrics, students complete a rubric self-assessment that instructors can review.
Students review ratings, criterion comments, rubric results, and the official assignment grade.
Verify locally: where students open self-assessment, what instructors see, and whether it affects the official grade.
Do not spend the lab rewriting rubric content.
This section is ready for FTCC-specific resources as they are added.

They record different kinds of results. Test the selected configuration in SpeedGrader and Student View rather than assuming they behave identically.
Students can view an attached rubric from the activity. Verify its placement and visibility in Student View.
The rubric result and assignment grade are related but not interchangeable in every configuration. Compare totals, settings, and the SpeedGrader grade field.
