By the end of this workshop, you will be able to:

  1. Construct a Canvas rubric with at least two criteria and two ratings per criterion.
  2. Configure rubric settings that control grading, score display, comments, and student interaction.
  3. Attach a rubric to an assignment and locate the rubric workflow for a graded discussion.
  4. Complete and revise a rubric assessment in SpeedGrader and verify the assignment grade.
  5. Preview and verify the student-facing rubric and self-assessment when enabled.
  6. Test and document one complete rubric workflow from construction through feedback.

Choose when: Rubric selections should calculate or support the assignment grade.

Remove points from rubric

Choose when: The rubric is for descriptive feedback without a rubric total.

Verify: Where the assignment grade will be entered and what students see.

Hide score total

Choose when: Criterion-level feedback should appear without emphasizing a total.

Verify: Whether the official assignment grade remains visible elsewhere.

Free-form comments

Choose when: Graders need flexible criterion-specific feedback instead of selecting ratings.

Verify: Grading efficiency and the resulting student display.

Student self-assessment

Choose when: The feature is enabled and available in the local Enhanced Rubrics environment.

Verify: Student access, instructor review, visibility, and grade impact.

Always test: rubric result → assignment grade → student view

Canvas Rubrics in SpeedGrader

Grade, save, and verify.

  1. Open the correct assignment or graded discussion in SpeedGrader.
  2. Open or expand the attached rubric.
  3. Select the intended rating or scale level for each criterion.
  4. Enter a criterion score when the interface permits it.
  5. Add concise criterion-level comments.
  6. Review the rubric total or assessment result.
  7. Save the rubric assessment.
  8. Verify the assignment grade field before moving on.
  9. Revise one criterion if needed and save again.
  10. Confirm the student can see ratings, comments, and the intended score information.

Final check: Rubric saved? Assignment grade verified? Student feedback visible?
